Mammograms are perfomed on our new Hologic Selenia digital mammography machine with CAD.Digital Mammography with CAD (Computer-Aided Detection)

Diagnostic Imaging of Milford performs routine screening and diagnostic digital mammography on our new Hologic Selenia unit. Digital mammography uses detectors that convert x-rays into electrical signals. These signals produce images of the breast that are seen on a computer screen or printed on special film. A CAD machine uses the digitized image and searches for abnormal areas of density, mass or calcification that may indicate the presence of cancer. These areas are highlighted on the image, which alerts the radiologist that further analysis is necessary. Our state-licensed mammography technologists who specialize in this field have many years of experience performing digital mammography procedures.

Screening Mammogram:

bullet Usually done on a yearly basis and is recommended in women age 40 and over.
bullet Can detect early breast cancer in women who do not experience symptoms.
bullet Can detect and diagnose breast disease in women experiencing symptoms such as a lump, pain or nipple discharge.
bullet Can show changes in your breast up to 2 years before you or a physician can feel them.

Diagnostic Mammogram:

bullet Performed to follow-up or evaluate any abnormal clinical findings such as a lump, cyst, nodule, or breast cancer.
bullet May be done after an abnormal screening mammogram to determine the cause of an area of concern.

Mammography waiting room at Diagnostic Imaging of MilfordFor the privacy of our patients, Diagnostic Imaging of Milford provides a separate Mammography waiting room and dressing area for women having mammogram procedures.

Mammography procedures can be slightly uncomfortable due to the compression of your breast. This compression is necessary to even out the breast thickness so all of the tissue can be visualized. The tissues are spread out so small abnormalities won’t be hidden by overlying breast tissue. Compression also holds the breast still to eliminate any blurring caused by motion. Our licensed, mammography technologists who specialize in this field are compassionate and understanding regarding the discomfort you may feel. They strive to make your examination as comfortable as possible without jeopardizing the quality of your breast film.

PREPARATION:

bullet On the day of your mammogram, you should not wear perfume, powder or deodorant, as the chemicals in these products may appear on the mammogram as calcium spots.
*It is extremely important to notify our office if you have had a previous mammogram in another facility in order for our radiologist to do a comparison of these examinations. You may be asked to bring your previous mammograms with you on the day of your examination or have them mailed to us before your procedure.*

Mammogram appointments may be scheduled for allotted early weekday mornings and on one Saturday morning a month for the convenience of our patients.
