CT Scan Q & A

What is a CT Scan?

A CT scan (computerized tomography) is a series of high-resolution x-ray images taken from numerous angles that are then processed by a computer program to create cross-sectional images of organs, bones, blood vessels and soft tissues inside the body. These cross-sectional images can be viewed on a computer monitor. Images produced via a CT scan are significantly more detailed than those taken by a regular x-ray machine, and can, therefore, detect conditions that may not be seen on a conventional x-ray. Sometimes, a physician may order a CT scan with various contrast agents for better visualization of specific areas. One contrast agent, known as a barium mixture, is taken orally, while the other is administered by injection.

For What Reasons Might a CT Scan Be Ordered?

A CT scan is a valuable diagnostic tool that may be ordered to:

  • Determine the cause of acute symptoms, including chest or abdominal pain, or breathing difficulties
  • Detect certain cancers, including lymphoma and cancers of the lung, liver, kidney, ovary, and pancreas
  • Diagnosing and formulating treatment for vascular diseases
  • Locating pulmonary embolisms and aortic aneurysms
  • Diagnosing and treating spinal and other skeletal problems
  • To quickly reveal internal injuries and bleeding after a trauma, such as a car accident

How Should I Prepare for My CT Scan?

You will be instructed not to eat or drink anything for a few hours before the scan and will need to change into a medical gown. In addition to clothes, you will need to remove jewelry, hearing aids, makeup and nail polish, as they may contain metal that can interfere with the scanning process.

What Does a CT Scan Procedure Entail?

The CT scanner is a giant donut-shaped machine. You will lie on a cushioned table that slides into and out of the machine, as a set of electronic x-ray detectors rotate around you. A technologist will monitor you from another room the entire time via a two-way speaker system. The procedure is painless, generally without any side effects, and lasts between 30 and 90 minutes.
